SMQ BOWL BLITZ: TO WATCH OR NOT TO WATCH? - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - The San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl: The only bowl game that offers you 4.20% APY on a five-month certificate!
The new kid on the block could have gotten a worse draw: a quirky offense that leads the nation in rushing, a big-armed quarterback with an NFL future, a big, bruising 1,200-yard rusher and one of the nation's best statistical receivers. Too bad it's hidden in possibly the worst time slot of the postseason. Pay your dues, son.
Who: Colorado State (6-5) vs. Navy (7-4) Where: San Diego Jack Murphy Qualcomm Stadium in beautiful San Diego, Cali, a city so breathtaking that SMQ nearly orgasms at its mention despite having never been within 200 miles of the place. San Diego is just that goddamn gorgeous.
San Diego and Navy, Sittin' in a Tree... USNA, despite travelling cross country, should be at home in So Cal, which houses a Navy "megaport" and has long been known for one of the country's largest military presences. Middie fans are buying tickets like crazy, too, so much so that the bowl has locked the team up for 2008, 2009 and 2010, if it qualifies. Or maybe the city just wants some extra muscle to guard the border.
Watch Because: Chances are few and far between to watch the old flexbone attack executed to perfection. These kids aren't the biggest or the fastest, but they play smart, they've got a lot of heart, they execute well, and play with a lot of grit and discipline. Don't Watch Because: It's a bunch of slow white guys running up the middle. Navy's passing game looks like your local high school's. What Else is On: You have no life. But the San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl isn't your only option to fill the void eroding your inner soul:
Spike! 10 p.m. CST - Police Videos: Alzheimer Crash, Drunken Driver Cliff Crash 60 mins. Footage includes a teenage girl suspected of drunken driving who tries to escape officers by speeding away in one of their vehicles. Also: cops chase a suspected drug user; teenagers race off in a sports utility vehicle. John Bunnell hosts.
VH1, 10 p.m. CST - Driven: Jamie Foxx 60 mins. The early career development of Jamie Foxx is examined through archival footage and interviews with insiders.
Everything about him screamed 'Oscar' right from the beginning...
Sci-Fi Channel, 10 p.m. CST - Terminal Error 120 mins. A man (Timothy Busfield) sabotages a former business partner's computer company with an intelligent virus that takes on a life of its own and spreads into the city, creating havoc. Brad Weston: Michael Nouri. Dylan Weston: Matthew Ewald. Alex: Marina Sirtis.
Nick at Nite, 11:30 p.m. CST, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air: The Wedding Show 30 mins. Will and Lisa's wedding plans get out of hand when Lisa's dad (John Amos) and Philip can't agree on the arrangements, so the couple heads for Las Vegas. Minister: Isaac Hayes; Samantha: Arnetia Waler-Francis; Angela: Cynthena Sanders; Lisa: Nia Long.
Watchability Rating (click here for the SMQ Watchability Scale): SMQ watched Colorado State whup up on Air Force in October, and the two academies are carbon copies athletically. If the USAFA couldn't slow down Kyle Bell, why would the USNA? Middies need to play slow down ball to neautralize better athleticism from Bell, Justin Holland and David Anderson. Navy novelty game wears off quick, Rams run away in second half.
SMQ's Pick: Colorado State 35, Navy 26 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Permalink
