ABOLISH COACHES' VOTES!

So coaches' votes in the final regular season USA Today (don't call it ESPN!) poll will be made public in December. Whoopee. If this were in effect last year, Jeff Tedford still wouldn't have known exactly which coaches helped toshaft his team and prompt a California-led effort to ban the BCS in Congress because the previous weeks' voting would still be secret; any coach who moved Texas ahead of Cal could say they already had the Longhorns ahead.

Anyway, there's not a coach alive who doesn't face much, much worse pressure, criticism, and second-guessing for issues far more pressing than their vote in a poll - especially one in which, you can be sure, coaches don't even vote! That duty's passed off to the SID or another underling who might actually have the opportunity to watch another team play. The most any coach will do is give a little input (make sure this team is in there somewhere, leave off so-and-so), and most probably don't even go that far. If any "coach" were to make a controversial vote, and be confronted with it (first of all, talk about an easy press conference), odds are they couldn't tell you what their ballot looks like. And for good reason - coaches have better things to do, like taking the time to make sure their team is prepared enough to play well enough to move up in the polls by winning.

Instead, why not just eliminate the coaches' poll altogether? They don't see enough to have more insight than anyone else, plus have motivation to elevate their own team - and, subsequently, its opponents. Its not a coach's job to rank teams; the media can handle that. I don't think the coaches would mind, either - maybe we should poll them to find out.
