THIS WEEK'S SMQ TOP 25 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - For the second week in a row, SMQ refuses to distinguish between the dominance of Do Not Fight Inevitable Rose Bowl Destiny Titans USC and Texas; they share the top spot at 1 and 1a.
Justification: Ohio State leaping LSU. The Tigers last three games have been wins over weak sister North Texas and wheelchair-bound comatose sister Appalachian State, with an overtime win over a very good Alabama team to vault them; the Tigers still have that overtime loss to fading Tennessee hanging around their necks. OSU, meanwhile, has totally crushed four good teams (Iowa, Michigan State, Minnesota and Northwestern) and played half of SMQ's top four (Penn State and Texas) down to the wire. The Buckeyes right now are a complete team and can match up with anyone; LSU has more question marks in the running game and in its offensive consistency.
The Tigers do vault Notre Dame.
The 'Noles remain ahead of Wisconsin and Florida based on their wins over Miami and Boston College. The Badgers (Michigan) and Gators (Georgia) also have big wins, but both came with key injuries to those opponents' star players (Mike Hart and D.J. Shockley). All three teams are fading quickly.
West Virginia drops a spot despite a good-looking win due to dominance by Michigan and UCLA. The Bruins look back on track, for now, and remain very dangerous on offense. Michigan's losses were all tough ones to good teams, and all without Mike Hart; since No. 20 has been back, the Wolverines are on a four game roll (and five out of six) against mostly good competition that's picking up steam. Very interesting matchup coming up this Saturday with OSU. The Mountaineers are doomed by schedule weakness, and a mediocre showing against its most worthy opponent (Virginia Tech).
Auburn is ahead of Georgia for obvious reasons; ditto once inept Iowa State's inclusion over occassionally very impressive Colorado.
