Golden Eagles and Hokies Meet For First Time Since 1994
Nov. 7, 2005
HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss Director of Athletics Richard Giannini has announced the addition of Virginia Tech to the 2006 football schedule in a one-game series on Sept. 16 in Blacksburg, Va.
The Golden Eagles will replace East Carolina on Virginia Tech's schedule. The Pirates had an opportunity to schedule a series with N.C. State starting in 2006, but had to open a game on its schedule. East Carolina officials asked Virginia Tech to start their series a year later than originally agreed. The three schools all agreed to the schedule change.
Southern Miss and Virginia Tech have met previously eight times between 1958 and 1994, with each school winning four games apiece. The Golden Eagles won the first two games in the series, 1958 (41-0/Hattiesburg) and 1971 (17-8/Blacksburg) and the Hokies won the next two games, 1972 (27-14/Blacksburg) and 1976 (16-7/Blacksburg). Southern Miss won 35-13 in 1988 (Hattiesburg), lost in 1990 (20-16/Blacksburg), won 13-12 in 1992 (Blacksburg) and lost the final game of the series, 24-14 (Hattiesburg) in 1994. Virginia Tech holds a 3-2 series in Blacksburg and Southern Miss is 2-1 in games played in Hattiesburg.
Southern Miss Head Coach Jeff Bower has faced Virginia Tech and its Head Coach Frank Beamer twice and is 1-1. Beamer is 2-2 against the Golden Eagles.
Beamer, who has been the head coach at Virginia Tech since 1987, holds the distinction of being the active coach with the longest tenure at his alma mater. Bower, who has been the head coach at Southern Miss since Dec. 1990, has the second longest tenure at his alma mater.
