THE BLOG POLL ALL-AMERICA TEAM - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Click here to read the details of the team.
Participation was lower than hoped for the Blog Poll All-America team, no doubt the result of its last-second inception and poor promotion. Next year, perhaps, some better organization, planning and trumpeting will help turnout exceed local school board primary levels.
Nevertheless, ballots did come, and thus is their democratic decree:
FIRST TEAM Offense QB: Vince Young, Texas RB: Reggie Bush, Southern Cal RB: DeAngelo Williams, Memphis WR: Dwayne Jarrett, Southern Cal WR: Jeff Samarzija, Notre Dame TE: Garrett Mills, Tulsa OL: Jonathan Scott, Texas OL: Marcus McNeil, Auburn OL: Taitusi Lutui, Southern Cal OL: Max Jean-Giles, Georgia OL: Greg Eslinger, Minnesota
Defense DL: Elvis Dumervil, Louisville DL: Matthias Kiwanuka, Boston College DL: Mario Williams, NC State DL: Haloti Ngata, Oregon LB: A.J. Hawk, Ohio State LB: DeMeco Ryans, Alabama LB: Paul Posluszny, Penn State DB: Jimmy Williams, Virginia Tech DB: Kelly Jennings, Miami DB: Aaron Gipson, Oregon DB: Michael Huff, Texas
Special Teams K: Mason Crosby, Colorado P: Daniel Sepulveda, Baylor KR: Ted Ginn Jr., Ohio State PR: Maurice Drew, UCLA
SECOND TEAM Offense QB: Matt Leinart, Southern Cal RB: LenDale White, Southern Cal RB: Laurence Maroney, Minnesota WR: Mike Hass, Oregon State WR: Sidney Rice, South Carolina TE: Marcedes Lewis, UCLA OL: D'Brickashaw Ferguson, Virginia OL: Eric Winston, Miami OL: Dan Mozes, West Virginia OL: Mark Setterstrom, Minnesota OL: Will Allen, Texas
Defense DL: Darryl Tapp, Virginia Tech DL: Mark Anderson, Alabama DL: Brodrick Bunkley, Florida State DL: Rodrique Wright, Texas LB: Chad Greenway, Iowa LB: D'Qwell Jackson, Maryland LB: Dale Robinson, Arizona State DB: Alan Zemaitis, Penn State DB: Dwayne Slay, Texas Tech DB: Tom Zbikowski, Notre Dame DB: Darnell Bing, Southern Cal
Special Teams K: Alexis Serna, Oregon State P: John Torp, Colorado KR: Cory Rogers, TCU PR: Willie Reid, Florida State
Unanimous: Only two players were first team on every ballot - A.J. Hawk and Reggie Bush. The only other player to appear on every ballot was Michael Huff.
Most Obscure Vote: SMQ could be accused of obscurity for his homerism selection of Southern Miss linebacker Kevis Coley, but Coley was C-USA defensive player of the year, so the pick is not that obscure. Many players received only one vote, a couple of whom SMQ had never heard of (like Corey McKeon, Nick Graham and Jimmy Contrell...but subsequent stat checks revealed pretty good numbers for these gentlemen, especially NCAA tackle leader Contrell). If we're talking about obscure homerism, though, nothing can top Boi From Toy's nomination of freshman Trojan linebacker Brian Cushing, who collected a whopping 14 solo tackles, three batted passes and zero sacks, interceptions or solo tackles for loss. But then, blind, shameless, hilariously biased submissions are par for the course with Boi this postseason.
More Numbers: All together, voters nominated more than 130 different players, almost half of which appeared on only one ballot. Every conference was represented by at least one vote, with the exception of the Sun Belt. The position with the most nominations was defensive back, with 22, followed by offensive line (21) and defensive line (19). Voters showed the least creativity when it came to quarterback, nominating all of three players: Young, Leinart and Brady Quinn.
By conference, votes broke down like this:
PAC Ten: 30 SEC: 22 ACC: 20 Big Ten: 18 Big XII: 18 Conference USA: 5 Big East: 4 WAC: 4 MAC: 1 Mountain West: 1 Note that 24 of BFT's 30 players hail from PAC Ten schools. So there you are.
Thanks for everyone who voted, and hopefully this can be better in the future. - - - - - Permalink
