SMU, USM RECOGNIZED FOR GRADUATION RATES, FREQUENTLY CONFUSED ACRONYMS - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - A stunning turn of events in Dallas, where SMU - a football program known primarily for the grossest malfeasance in the history of the otherwise pure, dignified sport - has managed the genuinely remarkable feat of graduating its entire 2000-2001 recruiting class:
(Emphasis SMQ's; HT: The always resourceful Wizard of Odds)
This may help explain the Mustangs' on-field performance the past decade or so...
- - - - - Starting at tailback for the Mustangs, number 3.14159265...
Seriously, the Mustangs are improving (5-6 in 2005, including the only win by anyone over TCU), and SMQ can't make fun of exceptional academics when his own alma mater ranks right up there among some of the most widely reputed brainiacs of big time athletics (all, not coincidentally, hoity-toity private schools with relatively high entrance barriers, unlike exceedingly state-sponsored, come-one-come-all USM):
The highest graduation rate of any major public school program - To the Top, baby!
On SMU's tremendous achievement, the story does not say, unfortunately, whether there is any modern precedent for a seemingly impossible 100 percent graduation rate. Maybe they cheated on that, too!
The article also includes a conference breakdown of recognized schools, led by nine from the ACC, more than twice as many as the runner-up conferences (the Big East and Big XII, four schools each over 70 percent). The SEC, as all will surely be shocked to learn, had but one school among the acceptably academic-oriented: Auburn (bet you thought Vanderbilt!)
WELCOME...

SMQ starts to sound more and more like the Gregg Easterbrook of our ideal memories every day - whip-smart, systematic, omnivorous in his intellectual tastes and yet unafraid of the cheap joke.
